What is Speech Therapy?

Speech therapy helps treat children with communication challenges, both in how they speak and in how they understand how others speak.

Speech therapy also treats other concerns such as chewing and swallowing, articulating words, auditory processing and even social skills.

The ultimate goal of speech therapy is that your child or teen can be understood by others and communicate with the world around them.

How Does Speech Therapy Work?

Kate Melillo and Cindy Hamilton offer speech therapy services for children and adolescents and are passionate about helping your child or teen communicate in a social world.

Speech, language, and executive functioning therapy are a little bit different for everyone because all goals are individualized to the needs of your child or teen.

When you contact us for speech and language services, we will discuss your child’s needs and what types of insurance/payment preferences you have to see if you are a good fit for our office. If not, we will make suggestions and referrals for other offices nearby.

After completing paperwork about your child’s background, your child will be evaluated on his/her skills in a particular area (language, speech, executive functioning, feeding, etc).

Once the evaluation is complete, Kate or Cindy will recommend what goals and type of therapy may work for your child, as well as how often therapy may be necessary.

Showing up each week for therapy sessions AND practicing skills at home are important for your child’s progress.

In fact, many times, parents will have “homework” to complete that will help facilitate a child’s learning. For example, we may recommend changing around spaces in the house, putting up visual schedules, and using different language patterns than you may be used to.
