A Growing Cause For Concern
It’s no secret that tech addiction and the overuse of technology in tweens and teens is a cause for concern. The American Academy of Pediatrics (2020) reports that children ages 8-12 spend 4-6 hours a day on screens, and teens spend up to 9 hours. Dangers associated with screen use include: violence and risk-taking behaviors, videos of stunts or challenges that may inspire unsafe behavior, sexual content, negative stereotypes, substance use, cyberbullies and predators, advertising aimed at your child, and misleading or inaccurate information.
We have a special interest in tech moderation because so many of our tween and teen clients struggle with safely using technology. We believe in moderation and teaching skills. We believe that one strategy does not work for every family
Over time we have created a method called “Media Mindfulness” that will help you set clear boundaries for your children’s tech use, provide you with tools on how to troubleshoot tricky tech situations, increase awareness about apps, games, and programs, and maintain accountability for family tech use. We offer an online Media Mindfulness course, as well as local in-person talks whenever possible.
