So Much More Than Social Skills Groups

The objective of our groups is to develop self-advocacy according to developmental level, in order to increase problem solving and healthy relationship forming.

Our groups do not “train social skills.” Rather, we help our clients see perspectives of the world and understand why and how their actions may differ from those who are neurotypical — and that it is o.k.

Dr. Cory and Kate use a trauma-informed approach, and Dr. Cory has extensive training in trauma modalities such as EMDR. We also teach self-advocacy, self-regulation, perspective taking and skills that help our clients use their executive functioning skills to navigate the social world.

This also includes safety/boundaries/consent as well as problem-solving skills – hence the name, Be a Problem Solver.

Self-Advocacy + Social Skill Philosophy

We believe that all individuals have the right to advocate for their own wants and needs in relationships. Navigating the social world not only includes forming relationships, but also using self-determination to make decisions and problem-solve, and using perspective-taking to understand the point-of-view of others.

In fact, we believe self-advocacy skills are more important than “social skills.” Why? Because all individuals communicate differently in the social world, and it’s our job to help our children and adolescents feel comfortable in their own skin, initiate social interactions that they choose, and ask for clarification, accommodations or change when needed.

We like to think of our groups as places where all children and young adults can learn how “social navigation” can help them see the world through their own perspective and the perspective of others.

Social skill building is at the heart of Be a Problem Solver Services and we recognize that this language may be offensive to some autistic individuals; we are still working on a better name for it. We are passionate about pragmatic language and emotional literacy because we believe that these skills drive true human interaction. However, we try our best to keep a perspective of inclusive neurodiversity.

Strategies

Groups use a variety of curricula and have a special flair, as Kate & Dr. Cory are both trained improv comedians, and they use these techniques in the delivery of self-advocacy and social skill preference training.

Elements of DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), SRSD (Self-Regulated Strategy Development), Executive Functioning Theory and Practice, Problem-Solving, and Social-Skills Navigation are also used.
