Meet Kate Melillo

Hello!  I am a Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist and trained comedienne. I am also a real person, a mom, a wife, and a lover of many kinds of ice cream.

Even though this bio has fancy information about my background, what I really want you to know is that I deeply care about helping children, parents and families learn to navigate the social world in the way that works best for them.

I love to use my knowledge of improv comedy to enhance how I teach self-advocacy, social skill preference/development, problem solving skills, soft skills in the workplace, and cultural diversity.

I have been committed to serving children and their parents for my entire career and I hope that you will see my enthusiasm and caring nature come through in all that we offer and do.

Located in Chapel Hill, NC and Fuquay Varina, NC for in-person or virtual appointments.

Professional Background

I received my Masters of Education degree in Communication Disorders with a focus on language skills and prior to earning this degree, I spent time as a social skills researcher. I helped design web-based programs and resources for neuro-diverse individuals to learn different types of social skills in the workplace as well as skills that help students manage complex changes..

I was also a preschool and kindergarten teacher here in our country as well as abroad. I’ve worked in the clinical speech and language field with a wide range of children from infancy to young adulthood, as well as older adults.

My passion is teaching you and your children how to navigate the social world using a neuro-diverse perspective. In a fast-paced world of social media and screens, I believe that now more than ever families can use every opportunity necessary to connect face-to-face in a way that feels good to them.

Specialty Areas

My specialty areas include:

  • Executive Functioning Coaching (completing tasks like homework, organizing, planning ahead, creating “future pictures,” motivation for task completion and goal setting).
  • Social skill Preference Development or in other words how to have good manners, communicate effectively with others, being considerate of the feelings of others and expressing personal needs in a healthy way.
  • Supporting parents in fostering social skills preferences at home for all ages.
  • Helping adolescents learn how to effectively use their social skills preferences in the workplace so they can follow instructions to get a job done well as well as communicate to their co-workers and boss in a healthy way.
  • Working with parents to define their role while their adolescent child transitions to the workforce.
  • Language therapy or in other words, playing and talking, using pictures, books, objects, or ongoing events to stimulate language development as well as speech therapy.
  • Creating a safe and fun environment for both children, teens and parents.

"Our family has been so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Kate!  As a speech therapist, she is kind and compassionate.  My son loved her sessions, and there were clear and impressive differences in his flexibility of language and fluency over the months that she worked with him.  My husband and I watched our son flourish with her direction, and much of his dramatic progress was a direct result of participating in Kate's Social Skills group.  We were amazed by the changes we observed in his approach to social situations, and loved how Kate taught him strategies to both dynamically navigate social communication and engage effective coping skills for emotional regulation.  His teachers have praised his excellent communication skills, with teachers and peers alike;  this kind of feedback has been the greatest gift I could receive as a parent, and it is in no small part due to Kate's dedication and guidance.  I would wholeheartedly recommend her services to any parents who desire improvements regarding their child's (or teen's) social communication and emotional development."
