We are coining the term "parallel energy" to denote how we talk to our kids and teens. Similar to co-regulation, we want to be on the same "page" but we also want to bring a calm parallel energy. Dr. Cory explains more in this episode.
Think of it this way, if you were at a bar, and someone came up next to you and started talking, it would feel a lot less threatening and nerve-wracking than if someone started directly approaching you face on.
This is how parallel energy works with our teens. If we can set the stage for chatting in a calm, relaxed way, still providing them their own space, we can bring a matching energy to the interaction.
