Is your tween starting to be a jerk?

August 23, 2022

I realized I was kind of a jerk, and now I am dealing with that feeling.

I had a guys weekend with an old friend a few days ago. He's been my buddy since middle school. We were chatting about high school when things were very rough for me, and he told me something that made my skin crawl.

He said that when we were in high school, I would invite him over while I was at someone else's house, and then he'd have to wait with my mom (for hours, sometimes), until I got back. cringe.

It's a jerk move, and though I know I had a lot of trauma then, I still don't like the feeling that I was unkind and inconsiderate to others.

The point is that I am actively doing my best to make sure my kids are kind and considerate. I know that it is completely developmentally appropriate for tweens and teens to start acting like jerks, but knowing this has helped me be more conscious of the behaviors I'd like to instill.

This week on the podcast, we're talking about typical tween milestones - like should you expect your tween to become a jerk? Or is that something you can actually fix?
